Writing Prompt
Here is this week’s writing prompt!
Prompt #1: In a small coastal town, there is a peculiar lighthouse that has been abandoned for decades. Every year, on the summer solstice, it mysteriously lights up for exactly one hour at midnight. No one knows who or what causes this phenomenon. Write the story of your character’s goal to uncover the truth about the lighthouse. Include elements of mystery, adventure, and a touch of the supernatural.
Prompt #2: Elena, an accomplished violinist, has just been offered the lead position in the city's prestigious orchestra. Meanwhile, Marco, a talented chef with a struggling family restaurant, is trying to keep his father's legacy alive after his untimely death and has to deal with growing competition.
One evening, after a long rehearsal, Elena wanders into Marco's restaurant, drawn in by the soulful music and the inviting aroma of authentic Italian cuisine. Marco, captivated by her presence and her genuine appreciation for his culinary art, strikes up a conversation.
Write the story of Elena and Marco as they navigate their personal and professional challenges, finding solace and strength in each other. How do their different worlds collide and complement each other? What sacrifices will they need to make for their love to flourish, and what dreams will they chase together?
Writing Exercise
Here’s this week’s writing exercise!
Start by creating a detailed character profile. Give your character a name, age, background, occupation, and any other relevant details. Consider their appearance, personality traits, and quirks.
Write a paragraph revealing a significant secret your character is hiding. This secret should be something that has a profound impact on their life and could dramatically alter the way others perceive them.
Set the scene in a location that is significant to your character (e.g., their home, workplace, a favorite café, etc.). Imagine your character is on the verge of having their secret discovered by someone important to them (a friend, family member, or colleague). Write the scene focusing on the tension and emotions involved as your character tries to prevent the revelation of their secret.
Include dialogue in your scene. Let the conversation flow naturally, using it to build suspense and deepen the reader’s understanding of your character’s relationships and motivations.
Decide how the scene will end. Will the secret be revealed, or will your character manage to keep it hidden? How does the outcome affect your character and their relationship with the other person involved?
Imagery
In honor of Pride month and as a member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, write about this image! Where is this parade? Is your character an ally or a member of the community? If an ally, write about their feelings and thoughts. If a member, write about how they feel about being accepted for who they are.
